How Do You Translate Your Personal Style Into Your Home?

12 February 2019

When it comes to our own personal style, we seem to instinctively know what we do and don't like. From sleek and tailored to a relaxed luxe Boho vibe, we go with what seems like a natural fit for our personalities, lifestyle and individual taste.

Whether you're the type who seemed to be born in six inch heels or more of a boxfresh white kicks person, what you choose to wear reflects how you want the world to see you. This same principle should translate into our homes, but sometimes it doesn't feel that easy to merge our personal style into our decor. We want our homes to reflect our personalities just as much as our clothes, but sometimes we panic and end up with a cookie-cutter, fallen straight into the catalogue look.

So if you're ready to craft a space that is a cut above, follow these simple tips to get started on infusing your inner sanctum with a bit more personal flair…

Start With One Piece

Not knowing where to begin is a really common problem, especially when there are multiple spaces needing your attention. In this case, it's a great idea to apply the same logic to building a decor scheme for the room as you would for an outfit - just start with one piece.

One statement piece that inspires you, can be enough to pull a whole look together! The same goes for your home. Whether it's a beautiful wing chair or a must have pair of bedside tables, finding the item of furniture which truly speaks to you can be the building block for an overall scheme you love.
Use this item as your ‘design anchor’ and choose the rest of the elements to complement your key piece. Once you have a starting point, it's much easier to build on it.

Don't Forget To Accessorise

Home decor looking a little bland? It could be that you've simply forgotten to accessorise!
Right now I'm staying in an Airbnb that is cute but it is very bare. It feels almost hospital like perhaps.

Much like adding a statement necklace or a pair of killer ankle boots to a plain jeans and tee combo, the right accessories can have a transformative effect on your home.

Add instant impact by creating a grouping of objects - it could be a wall full of framed black and white prints, a collection of cute throw cushions or fa jungle of indoor plants. Think of these items as the accessories you add to your home, and know that you can change them up to suit the seasons or just your mood, the same as you do with your own outfits.

Create A Contrast

Great ensembles quite often feature an element of contrast - think of a feminine dress paired with a leather jacket, or a slouchy boyfriend tee with a fitted skirt. You can achieve the same effect at home by contrasting textures and materials to achieve a rich, layered style. Pair patterned tiled floors with soft metallic accents and textured cushions.

Weave in elegant geometric prints and beautiful area rugs or search for the perfect vase to set off that side table.

Have Fun

Lastly, don't forget to enjoy yourself! Fashion - whether on our backs or in our homes - is all about discovery and fun. Something about home decor feels quite serious but it doesn't have to be that way.

You also don't need to spend a fortune to create decorating impact- if in doubt, put your money in hard to change elements like flooring in neutral colours, and inject pattern and vibrancy with inexpensive touches which can be replaced without breaking the bank.
