Why is summer filled with pests?

Let’s start by talking about why pests are attracted to your home during the summer.

Moisture - Pests need water to survive and thrive. When there’s a small shower or high humidity, it can bring the pests out since they need the added moisture in order to survive. More moisture essentially means more pests, and this can even cause problems for your home. If it’s been a particularly dry couple of months then they might start to seek damp areas inside your home for refuge.

Food - Summer offers plenty of food for pests because the plants and other vegetation in your garden grow at a much faster rate, creating an abundance of food that pests can feed on. It’s also not uncommon for you to create more food waste such as the aftermath from parties and barbeques.

Daylight - With the longer days and shorter nights, summer gives pests a lot more time to feed and roam around in the light. This means we see more pests over summer because they’re simply active for longer hours.

Temperature - Temperatures can also affect pests and make them more active throughout the day. However, if the temperature is too hot then they can withdraw underground or find shelter in your home.

As you can see, summer creates the perfect conditions for pests to grow and wreak havoc on your home and lifestyle. Luckily, there are a couple of things you can do to ensure that they don’t make too much trouble.

How to deal with summer pests

From refreshing your home to being more mindful about how much food waste your produce, we’ve put together a couple of tips on how you can ensure that pests don’t overrun your home during the summer.

  • Keep your home as clean as possible. Be it maintaining your yard or cleaning crumbs from your home as soon as possible, it’s vital that you aim to keep your home as clean as you can so that you can avoid pests getting attracted to your home.
  • At the first site of a pest, make sure you start dealing with it. If you see termites, call termite control. If you see ants, call pest control. The sooner you notice that a pest has invaded your home, the sooner you should give the relevant people a call. It’s vital that you look for ways to not only prevent the pest infestation but to stop it immediately if you notice it happening.
  • Trim vegetation and make sure you stop its growth. The more vegetation you cull, the better. You essentially want to try and keep vegetation at a minimum by creating a no-vegetation barrier around your home. This will help prevent hidden entrances into your home and also drastically reduce the chance of pests overtaking your home.
  • Make sure you dispose of food waste properly. Getting rid of food waste properly is the key to ensuring that pests are not attracted to the inside of your home. If you’re throwing away leftovers, make sure your trash cans are sealed correctly and that you’re not accidentally leaving food dumped around the home. This will ensure that your home is protected from pests and that they’re not drawn to the food waste.
  • Inspect your home for cracks and entrance points. Finding points of entry that can fit a pest is difficult due to their size, but you essentially want to look for cracks and crevices that have signs of pests, such as droppings and carcasses. You can seal these cracks with a sealant to ensure that the pests do not manage to get in.

Hopefully, this article has given you some ideas on how you can not only get rid of pests in the home but also prevent them from entering or invading your home this summer.
