The Sound of Music in Sydney!

Last weekend, the good folks of Nuffnang Australia put out the call for wonderful local bloggers that would like to attend and review the musical stage show that has just hit Sydney. The Sound of Music, everyone's favourite German singing movie. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the beloved film which first captivated audiences in 1965. I of course jumped at this amazing opportunity, as did the likes of a few other local bloggers.
Following it's record-breaking run at the London Palladium, the world’s best-loved musical, The Sound of Music is now playing in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre and coming soon to Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide!

Keen as a bean in my 'Finders Keepers' Playsuit

I was given a double pass and travelled down to Sydney, Sunday afternoon with my partner Josh, who thankfully also enjoys seeing stageshows. But he loves me enough to accompany me even if he didn't. 
When we arrived at the beautiful and archaic Capitol Theatre, we headed up the stairs towards the door number on our ticket before we were escorted to our seats. It was almost a full house for the 6pm Sunday performance. A few quieter rows behind us allowed for some younger audience members to belt out the lyrics to their favourite tunes without causing a fuss.

The sets were simple but well done in this lavish and critically acclaimed production. For those who haven't seen the movie, (you should!) The Sound of Music tells the uplifting true story of the wannabe nun Maria, joining the von Trapp family as a governess for their seven children. The children are hostile at first towards dear Maria, but are soon drawn towards her love of music and kind ways as she sings her way into their hearts.

Returning to the stage in the role of Captain von Trapp is the multi-talented Cameron Daddo. Starring alongside Cameron are many of Australia’s favourite stage performers; Marina Prior in the role of the Baroness Schraeder, Lorraine Bayly as Frau Schmidt, Jacqui Dark as Mother Abbess, and joining them in the coveted role of Maria is one of Australia’s newest and most outstanding award-winning musical theatre stars, Amy Lehpamer who you may recognise as Janet from Sydney's most recent run of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I was thoroughly impressed with the performance by all of the cast, especially that of the younger von Trapp children. While nothing outshined the amazing voice of Amy Lehpamer as Maria, the von Trap children were the true stars in my opinion. With every song they sung more enchanting than the last. 
In the film the song "So Long, Farewell" sung when the children are headed off to bed, was always a favourite of mine growing up. The young cast did not disappoint with their beautiful rendition of the song. I was drawn in every time they were on stage. 
With its unforgettable score, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music is heartwarming to those of all ages and is filled with some of the most memorable songs ever performed in the world of musicals, including My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, The Lonely Goatherd, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, and of course the eminent title song, The Sound of Music. Combined it makes this stageshow the perfect outing for families with members of any age. 

Tickets are now available for The Sound of Music which is only playing for a limited time at The Capitol Theatre. Tickets are in short supply, and just quietly, I'm pretty sure they would make for an amazing Christmas gift. It may be last minute, but it won't look anything but well thought out.
