Your Shape & How to Flatter It

4 July 2019

Have you ever wondered why you sometimes feel more confident in some clothes compared to others? It could be blind luck, but it could also be to do with the fact that some clothes show off your body type in a better way.

The notion of a “body type” seems a little outdated in today’s world where a breast implants surgeon can modify the way you look with a scalpel. But generally, we have to work with what we're given. Although you can wear whatever the heck you want to wear, some clothes will naturally be more flattering on your shape than others. Don't let it limit you, these are only suggestions and helpful guidelines if you want as it can also open up entirely new directions for your wardrobe to go down.

Here are some of the clothes choices you could make, based on your body type. Check it out below.

If your bust is larger than the rest of your body, your hips are narrow, and your midsection is fuller, you have what’s usually called a round or oval body type. The aim of those who are round-shaped should be to find visual ways of breaking up the body in the middle by highlighting the shoulders and legs.

One of the best strategies is to use high-waisted skirts which fit around the narrowest section of your midriff, around the navel. The plaiting of the dress will naturally hide your middle while providing plenty of space to show off your legs and perhaps even a section of your torso above your belly button.

The rectangle is the name that’s been given to bodies where the hips are the same size as the waist. The aim of people with this figure should be to find ways to emphasise the bust and waist and attempt to make it look more proportional.

Blouses with a tie around the middle help to keep volume in the upper chest area while artificially narrowing the waist to make it appear shapely.

On a similar theme, jackets with a cinch also work particularly well, again opening up the chest and shoulder area while leaving the waist minimal and exposed.

If the majority of your body mass sits around your hips, then you have a triangle-shaped body. The aim of the woman with a triangle-shaped figure is, according to style experts, to accentuate the waist while flaring out to conceal the hips. But why do that when big hips are "hip" as hell. Wear shapely jeans to really show off that booty of yours.

Jackets with loud shoulder sections are ideal for this purpose. The strong shoulders make the bottom half of your body appear smaller by comparison. The same goes for any item of clothing that reveals the shoulders.

There are many more types of body shapes, as everyone is different. Most importantly, wear what you feel comfortable wearing!
