The Best Ways To Recover After A Heavy Workout

30 August 2020

Working out can give us a lot of pleasure in life. It solves lots of problems when it comes to our physical and mental health, as well as our social life. Some people use it as a means of keeping active in a pretty non-active lifestyle overall. Many others like to test their own mettle and strive to become the best possible physical specimen possible. All in all, exercising does a lot more good than bad in this life.

It’s not something we can continually keep up, though. Even the fittest and most durable athletes on the planet need to rest from time to time in order to receive a little physiotherapy or gentle respite. During these rest periods, a lot of people don’t really know what to do in order to maximize their physical and mental contentment. It’s okay if you’re not too sure yourself as we can’t all be expected to know everything fitness/nutrition-related. Fortunately, it’s not all that difficult – it’s just a case of taking in a few fundamental pointers and sticking with them pretty strictly. Here are a few ideas for you:

Warm Down Afterwards

At the end of a workout, it’s good to do a little warm down. This is the same concept as a warm-up before you begin the intense stuff. Instead of just quitting and stopping completely, your muscles get a chance to slow down and smoothly. Think about it like a car stopping – would you rather come to a slow halt or slam the breaks on rapidly?

Fill Up That Belly With Food

Your body’s muscles will be completely zapped after a workout, so they’ll need to repair. They’ll also need to grow if you’re to improve upon your last session, of course. In order to do that, you’ll need to eat and get all of the right macronutrients into your body. In order to expend energy, we first need to add some!

Give It A Few Days Before Repeating The Intensity

The idea of constantly bashing out amazing workouts seems like a great idea as it seems like it would make you fitter, healthier, stronger, and leaner in a much quicker timeframe. That’s not how it works, though. Your body needs to rest or it won’t be able to perform to the best of its ability. Many powerlifters, for instance, like to overload their training for a couple of weeks before having a week of light work with little-to-no effort (compared to the other weeks, of course).

Cheat Day!

The thought of eating the best foods all of the time seems great, but your body and mind need to be able to blow off steam with a ‘cheat’ day once in a while. Your mind needs it because life is meant to be enjoyed and it’ll give you the motivation to work it off! The body needs it because your metabolism needs to be jump-started every now and again. If you have the same foods over and over again, then your body will get used to the process. A few days of awful eating will make your stomach (and the rest of your body) feel a little different – thus, working a little harder when processing the nutrients.
