Don't Delete Your Domain - My $140 Mistake

19 October 2015

I'm an idiot. This is a blog post warning you to never ever do what I have done. Because it was and is a nightmare. One that I haven't even fixed yet.

Last week I saw that my .com domain with Crazy Domains was expiring on the 14th. Good. I was sick of them and I didn't want my blog to be with Crazy Domains anymore.

My domain expired, and unfortunately, instead of a giant hand reaching through the computer and stopping me, I deleted the domain.

This sounds stupid to start with, obviously. But here's my logic, I hate you Crazy Domains, I would like to registered with Net Registry now. My domain has expired, it's done. I had it back ordered with Net Registry, ready to scoop it up once it was released back into the wild. So I delete my .com section from Crazy Domains and I go to register it at the other domain server.

It's not available, that's okay, no worries. I wait a few days, and it's still not available. How strange. So I contact Crazy Domains, all casual, like hi there I deleted my domain when I can I take it with me. Basically.

I get a response and smacked with the undeniable truth of a hidden part of domains that I should have known but had no clue about.

Sorry, after a domain has fully expired or been deleted, there is a Redemption period of 35 days. If you wish to reclaim your domain and use it before then, you can pay our Redemption fee of $140.

What. The. Heck.

If you hadn't noticed lately that you were having trouble accessing my blog, it is because nearly every single link around the web, goes through the permanentprocrastination.com url. And as I currently do not have the .com set up or active. It doesn't work.

Just to give you an idea of whether I should save my $140 and just wait until November 20th for my blog domain to be released, (with no guarantee I would get it) - My current daily pageviews have dropped to about 60. That is not okay. I like blogging, it is my passion and I can not improve if for over a month hardly anyone can even access my blog!

I filled out the form, and emailed it to them, along with my pay details for the $140. That was on Saturday. I haven't received a confirmation on anything, (just an email saying thanks for your email) the money hasn't been taken from me yet, and after contacting other support, it says it will take at least 5 days, from the time that they take the money!

I have been kicking myself. I am such an idiot! In an annoyed stupor, I decided to register permanentprocrastination.net for no real reason whatsover, except for obviously to throw money at more things. (if you could see me, I'm shrugging really hard, at myself, in a mirror.)

Why?? So I have no idea when I am going to get given my .com back. Hopefully by the end of the month. If they don't take my $140 out by the end of this week, and start the do over process, they are going to get a very angry phone call.

After all this, if I had made this same error at Net Registry, the redemption fee would be $220. Maybe Crazy Domains isn't so bad afterall.

I'm writing this post, because I had no idea that the Redemption period was an official thing. I made an expensive mistake and now it's my turn to deal with it.

(Bloglovin' works again currently because I emailed them and had them change my url to my old one)

Had you heard about the redemption period for domains?

  1. Oh my gosh Tegan that sounds absolutely crazy! I'm so sorry this happened to you and you had to fork over quite a bit of dough! But, for the record if it makes you feel any better I would have made the same mistake because when it comes to technology and all the technical side of the blogging world I fail horribly. . .horribly haha.

  2. I wondered why I couldn't get on your blog recently! I was thinking something was up at my end...

But that's such a shame you've had to fork out so much $$$-wise. I'm such a cheapskate with my blog that I try to buy/work out things as cheap as I possibly can haha. I really hope everything sorts itself out soon and that you can get your .com domain back as soon as possible!

  7. Sounds like a lot of trouble! :(

I'm still looking at a .com address for my blog, but it's taken by one of those domain hijackers. And I'm not willing to pay a large amount of money.

Hope you get your domain back without further delays!

    1. Hey Natassia,

Put the domain you want on back order (then when they get bored and don't renew it you should be able to pick it up for normal price of a domain.) Also go to whois and check when the registration for that domain is going to expire and keep an eye out :)

  8. Ahhh this all makes sense now! So bloody annoying that this happened. I have been wondering where your blog went - so glad to see it back and running. I have been thinking that I need to personalise my domain name very soon. After all this can you suggest a domain site to run it from? x

  11. I always thought you could easily transfer domain ownership to your new host? I'm in the process of changing hosts, so hope this is the case.

  12. Oh how stressful!! I had the same situation with a client and they have kept it on a month to month while they pick a new provider. But they learnt the same valuable lesson. I'm sorry you have to go through this

  15. Oh gosh girl, this sounds horrific! Why are all these companies so confusing to navigate and just a pain to deal with. I really really hope you get everything sorted really soon. So crazy that they haven't even taken your money yet, you think they would be eager to snatch it up!

  16. Ah man this sounds so crap and I sympathise with you cause that's definitely something I'd do! $140 is a lot of money so you'd think they'd atleast get it sorted ASAP! Good luck with it all and I hope you get it sorted.

  17. I'm so sorry to hear this. I've been trying to access your blog, I couldn't. Now I found this again. Anyways, I had the same problem with my old domain, the reason why I changed to wildest-heart.net. I hope everything will be ok soon. :(

  21. Ugh, how terrible. That redemption fee sounds like bullshit. Did you know you can just transfer your domain before it expires? I was just looking into this the other day because I want to transfer a domain I registered to hover.com, on the recommendation of some people I know. Here's the info page: https://help.hover.com/entries/96455497-Domain-Transfers-FAQ I guess it might be too late now, but it's good to know for the future!
Try not to feel too bad--we all make dumb mistakes once in a while. There are so many different ways to screw up, and in the big scheme of things, this one isn't so bad!
