How Much Do you Trust a blog?

14 February 2019

Gaining the trust of your readers is so important if you want to build a following on your blog. It’s important that a reader sees you as proficient in the areas that you’re writing about, otherwise, it's unlikely they'll keep coming back.

People also need to feel that their information is safe on your blog as fears about cyber-security are on the rise. If you find that you’re struggling to build a base of regular readers, it might be because you’ve got trust issues.

These are some of the easiest ways to build trust with your readers and keep them coming back to your blog.

Quality Content

Good blog content is obviously important because people aren’t going to become regular readers of a blog that doesn’t post interesting and informative articles. But it’s also an important tool for trust.

If you start posting content that isn’t researched properly and there are certain facts that you’re getting wrong, how can they trust anything that you say? In the era of fake news, it’s more important than ever that your information is accurate. Always check the sources that you’re using if you’re using factual information in your articles and check it with multiple sources, rather than just relying on one.

Secure Login Pages

If readers have to log in to your site to access exclusive content or maybe even buy products from you, security is essential. People are reluctant to give their information to a website that they don’t trust, so you need to make sure that your login page is secure. Jumio's Netverify service is a great system for identifying customers and confirming their identity in a secure way.

Security is important, but you also need to make it a quick and easy process for your readers. Making them put a lengthy password in and asking them a long list of security questions might keep their information safe but they’re not going to want to do that every time they visit your site.

Professional Design

I'm always preaching this and the way that a website looks has a big impact on trust. If you visit a site and it looks like it was built by a cheap web designer a decade ago, you’re going to assume that it’s not very secure and that the blogger doesn’t invest that much time or money into building a good site.

But if you visit a site and it looks professional, you’re more likely to trust it. That’s why it’s important that you think properly about template design for your blog. Make sure that it’s simple yet elegant. But prioritise functionality. People don’t want to use a site that is frustrating to navigate.

Be Yourself

People trust people more than they trust companies or organisations. Your readers come to your blog because of your personality as well as the information that they get from your articles.

If you let your personality shine through and build a relationship with your readers, they’re far more likely to trust you.
