Swamped By Stuff? Practical Solutions For A Tidy Home

15 October 2019

Are you a self-confessed hoarder? Do you feel like you’ve outgrown your home? Are you sick of seeing stuff everywhere you turn? If you’re finding it tough to keep on top of tidying, and your possessions have taken over, don’t panic. Here are some practical tips to get your pad in shape.

Decluttering

Many of us are guilty of hanging onto things we don’t really want or need. Before we know it, small mounds become mountains and we have attics full of boxes and spare rooms that don’t have any visible floor space. If clutter has got the better of you, it’s time to embark on a decluttering operation. Tackle each room, tidying up and sifting through your stuff to see if there’s anything there you’d like to throw away, sell or donate.

If you’ve got brand new clothes hanging in your wardrobe with tags attached, but you know you’re never going to wear them, you could sell them on an online auction site. If you’ve got shelves full of books you’ve read, games, or DVDs, donating to charity is a great idea. Try and be ruthless when you’re decluttering your home if you’re short on space. Unless you use items regularly, or they have sentimental or financial value, consider parting ways with them.

Storage solutions

If your home is packed to the rafters, it’s beneficial to explore storage options. One great idea is to make use of local storage facilities. If you have boxes of stuff that you don’t want to throw away, you have old furniture that you haven’t currently got space for, or you have items that you only use once a year, for example, Christmas decorations or equipment or clothing for adventure holidays, hiring a storage unit will enable you to keep hold of them while freeing up valuable space at home.

It’s also wise to consider adding some crafty storage solutions to your house or apartment. If you don’t have a vast amount of space, look for furniture with built-in storage, for example, beds with drawers underneath.

Regular tidying

Nobody wants to spend a well-earned weekend off trawling through a basement full of boxes or vacuuming from top to bottom, but if you put off tidying in the week, this is usually what happens. Instead of letting your stuff pile up and leaving items like pieces of clothing lying around, make it your mission to keep on top of tidying, sprucing up your home every couple of days and making sure you put things away before you go to bed.

This will prevent clutter from collecting and make the job of cleaning your home much simpler and faster.

Do you feel like your home has been taken over by stuff? If you’re drowning in clutter, now is the time to tidy up, get rid of anything you don’t want or need, and investigate storage solutions. Throw away unwanted belongings, make use of storage units, and tidy up regularly. Even the simplest steps will make your home look spotless and keep clutter-related stress at bay.
