Scents and Self-Esteem: Everything You Need to Know

21 January 2020

Yes, it’s true. Your favourite fragrance can indeed help to boost your confidence. Think about it – when you smell great, you feel great. It is that simple. However, the science behind it all goes quite a lot deeper than that. Here are somethings that you should know about scents and self-esteem and how you can find the right fragrance for you.

How can scents impact our confidence?

The practise of aromatherapy has been around for centuries, and for a good reason. Science has proven that certain scents and aromas can completely alter how we behave, think, and feel. Scents can be powerful mood enhancers, can aid in fighting depression and anxiety, and can assist us in putting our already-existing skills and assets to better use. The reason is that a person’s sense of smell, which is also known as the ‘olfactory system’ has a direct link to the limbic system. The limbic system is a primitive part of the brain which takes the leading role in interpreting emotions and memories.

Essentially, this means that scents that your brain interprets as ‘pleasant’ or ‘familiar’ will automatically leave you feeling happier and more confident. You could even enhance this fragrance by adding either female or male pheromones on top of your perfume in order to trigger a response in a person's subconscious and make them see you in a certain light. The happier, more confident feeling is why choosing a fragrance is such a personal and intimate process. A scent that makes one individual feel amazing may have little effect on you – never mind the fact that a person’s unique body chemistry and skin type is responsible for dictating how a fragrance ‘works’ on them.

How to find your perfect perfume

Now that you know why the right perfume has the power to boost your self-esteem, you will undoubtedly want to find a women’s perfume that does exactly that. Here are some tips:
  • Visit a variety of retail stores and test perfumes that take your fancy, being careful never to test more than four at any one time.
  • Spritz a generous amount on your wrists or your inner elbow.
  • Don’t decide which perfume you love then and there. Most fragrances take time to really ‘develop’, so ensure that you smell them regularly over the next few hours. The initial scent that you smell will be the top notes. These will eventually fade away to reveal the heart notes and, eventually, the stronger base notes will start to shine through.
  • Along with the developing scents, take note of how strong the fragrance remains as time goes by. Some scents adhere better to certain people’s skin. Therefore, while you may adore the fragrance itself, it may only last for an hour or two before needing to be reapplied.
  • Once you have found ‘the one’, do yourself a favour and opt to purchase it online as opposed to in-store. It is so much easier to find the best possible deal online as you can shop around and compare prices.

While the process of finding a great perfume can prove time-consuming, do your best to enjoy every moment of it. Rest assured, you will be able to step out as your most confident self, ready to conquer the world!
