Updating Your House on a Budget

31 January 2020

Whether you are just moving into a new house or looking to update a home you have lived in for a long time, it is important to make your house your own and provide updates over time. Here are some ways to update your home without spending a lot of money.

Entry Ways

The first thing people see when they come to your home is the front door and entryway. Making that area more inviting can make a difference when it comes to first impressions of your home. Painting your front door, hanging a wreath, and having an uncluttered entryway is the best way to set the tone for the rest of your house.

Backsplashes

Another inexpensive way to spruce up your space is to add in or change the backsplash in your kitchen. Tile is one of the most popular ways to go, but it can also get expensive. You can try things like tin ceiling tiles or wooden beadboard instead if you want a unique look that costs less. Wallpaper, stainless steel, and magnetic paint are all creative ways to add some character to your kitchen.

Safety Upgrades

It is essential to live in a safe home as well as a beautiful one. If you have been putting off any safety issues, those should be at the top of your list. Security systems don’t have to cost a lot, but they can make you feel much safer. You should also make sure all your plumbing and wiring is up to date and reliable. If you do need to replace anything underground, consider hydro excavation, which is a safer way of digging in your yard for major projects.

Headboards

A great new headboard for your bed can be a great accent piece in your bedroom. It can set the tone of the room, and they can reflect your personality. The great thing about headboards is that you can quickly build one yourself out of something that you are passionate about in other areas of your life. Using salvaged materials instead of buying them can also make this a budget-friendly project.

Baseboards

You can add a sense of sophistication to any room by adding new baseboards or crown molding. You can even make it simpler by having it all cut at the lumberyard, be sure that all your measurements are correct or you will regret it later.

Light Fixtures

Light fixtures are another way that you can spruce up any room. These are usually outdated very quickly, so taking the time to update them can make the whole room seem more modern. You can also add a dimmer switch to your current light to make it a little more versatile.

Small Details

Another way to add some extra sparkle to any space on a tight budget is to update the small details we usually overlook. Cabinet hardware is one of these things. Adding new hardware to cabinets and drawers in the kitchen or bathroom can give the whole room a modern look. The same goes for the light switch and outlet covers.
