Tips for Clearing an Overgrown Garden in a Weekend

18 August 2021

Clearing a very overgrown garden can be an intimidating task. Sometimes you may feel as though you are constantly battling with a messy space and things can escalate quickly if you do not try and stay on top of things. If you want some help, then this is the guide for you.

Get some Help

You could easily pay a landscaping team to try and clear your garden for you, but this can be expensive. If you know that you have the time and if you are willing to put in some elbow grease then clearing your garden can be an incredibly satisfying experience.

It can be great exercise for you as well. You will get more done if you have help, so consider asking your family and your friends for assistance. When you do, you will soon find that you are able to really get things done.

Dress Well

Clearing an overgrown garden does come with its perils. You have to make sure that you get dressed for the job. Wear some sturdy shoes or strong boots, just in case you nearly end up putting a garden fork through your foot. Sturdy shoes will help you to stop yourself from falling over as well, so keep that in mind. Long sleeves will give you some protection against brambles too, so keep that in mind.

Take Care of the Big Stuff

Before you even think about tackling the greenery, you need to try and make sure that you pick up anything loose. This can include broken glass, rubbish or old tools. When you have done this, you then need to try and tackle any overgrown shrubs, trees or hedges.

This will allow more light to come into your garden and it will stop your plants from being shaded as much. This will make it a much safer working environment and it will also boost your spirits. Cut back on big branches with loppers or some secateurs if you can. Now would be the time for you to look into fencing companies if you want to repair your boundary.

Garden Shredder

You may be wondering, at this point, what you are going to do with all of the wooden debris that you have piling up. The best thing that you can do is invest in a garden shredder.

You cannot begin to hope to clear your overgrown garden in a weekend if you do not have a good shredding tool. The volume of green waste you have will probably be overwhelming. This is especially the case if you are choosing to clear it in spring or in summer. A garden shredder can turn your wooden waste into mulch very quickly.

Clearing the Ground

Clearing the ground is also important. When you have cut back on everything, you will need to strim any overgrown grass. Remember that rats, snakes, hedgehogs and mice can all hide in the undergrowth, so you have to be careful about this. Watch out for wasp nests too, as these can be very dangerous if you disturb them.
