5 Steps Towards Having an Environmentally Friendly Home

13 August 2019

We all want to do our part for the environment, its something that should unite us all. We all pay attention to things like global warming and we are left asking ourselves “What can we do?” well the answer is never a simple one but there are always small things we can do to ensure we are doing our bit, sometimes we can even save a little bit of money in the process. So take a look at the steps below and see if these small changes could be suited to your little world.

Know Your Recycling

This one sounds quite obvious but it isn’t as black and white as it sounds. Recycling does require some priority. Some things you think are recyclable actually aren’t. Paper receipts, for example, are not. They are however toxic and contain Bisphenol A. Another common misconception is those single-use plates and cutlery that are labelled as biodegradable, are, in fact, non-compostable and they only biodegrade at high heat.

Check those Switch and Taps

Most people do not realize that leaky taps and wasted electricity can not only harm your bank balance but it can also be quite detrimental to the environment. The more we use unnecessarily the more unwilling damage we are causing. If we all tightened that dripping tap, turned off the unused plug or even better made a switch to using solar power, over the course of a year, you’ve not only saved the planet a little, you have also saved some money.

Watch Your Waste

One of the most damaging things to the environment and even more so, to your pocket, is food waste. Every single year around 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted across the world. Looking at this alone is shocking in itself. Taking into account production, transportation and then disposal, we are now reminded of how much energy, water, and fuel is wasted at the same time.

Going Gourmet

Sometimes we all like to treat ourselves a little bit, what if that luxury came at more of a cost than we realized. Unbelievably, some of the things causing huge issues at the moment, seem the most insignificant. Tea and coffee, well not so much the ingredients but the receptacle they are distributed in are examples of this with as many types of coffee pods are harmful to the environment. Ensure that if you do buy coffee pods that the ones you buy are environmentally sustainable. Many brands have started to move in this direction so if you do a little research a small change can go a long way.

Upcycle Whatever You Can

Upcycling is not only an amazing way to save some money, save the environment and give your house a new lease of life, it can also be a way of making a little money. Doing something as simple as painting an old piece of furniture and selling it on, could save something destined for a landfill.

So if you think you are ready to make a few small changes, maybe a few of these can help you along the way.
